WELDING AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE

  Institute of Welding and Advanced Manufacturing was founded in December 2014, being affiliated with the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University. The welding discipline is main core discipline and research field in the institute.

  The welding discipline of Tianjin University was founded in 1952, which were one of two earliest welding major in China. It was one of the first authorized disciplines to educate masters and doctors.

  From the foundation of the welding discipline, a lot of famous scholars and experts in welding were graduated, such as the Professor Meng, Guangzhe (the first president of Chinese Welding Society), Professor Shan, Ping (two-term president of Chinese Welding Society and winner of Welding Lifetime Achievement Award in China), Professor Zhang, Wenyue (famous welding metallurgy expert), Professor Huo, Lixing (famous welding structure expert), Professor Li, Junyue (welding arc physics expert who firstly researched welding arc physics in China), Professor Zhao, Jiarui (famous expert of welding equipment and automation). And lots of talents in welding, such as Tianhu Song, Zhiling Tian, Hongyang Jing, Bogang Tang, and Yonglun Song, were educated from here too. It is one of the most important education bases of welding talents in China, which did great contributions to Chinese economics and society.

  At present, Institute of Welding and Advanced Manufacturing has 30 teachers, 97% of which has Ph. D. degree. Among them, one funded by the “National Thousand Talents” program, one funded by in the “Tianjin Thousand Talents” program and five of them were supported by the “New Century Excellent Talents” of Ministry of Education in China.

  Main research fields of welding discipline include life prolongation and safety assessment for welded structures, welding metallurgy and new welding materials, high temperature electronic packaging and 3D print technology, efficient / special welding technology and welding automation, surface engineering. The researches on life prolongation and safety assessment for welded structures, welding metallurgy and welding arc physics lead in China, for example, the first paper of flux cored wire was published here; the first production line of flux core wire were designed and manufactured here; the earliest commercialized flux cored wire formula were designed here; the earliest low-phase-transformation-temperature welding consumable for prolonging the fatigue life were manufactured here; the first wide plate testing machine were designed and manufactured here, the first drop testing machine were designed and manufactured here; the first ultrasonic impact treatment machine for prolonging the fatigue life of welding structure were designed and manufactured here, the arc physics researches started here; the first vibratory flush butt welding machine and pull-mode friction taper plug welding were developed here too; and underwater welding researches (include underwater arc welding and underwater friction stitch welding) lead too.

  Recent year, the Institute of Welding and Advanced Manufacturing in Tianjin University did lots of work in teaching and researches, such as “Welding Power Supply and its Control” became the first “National Quality Course” in welding discipline; two researches wined the first prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Award; research funds increased every year and the average funds per teacher in 2015 reaches about 2,000,000 Yuan which leads in the same disciplines in other University of China. From overall strength in teaching and research, the welding discipline in Tianjin stands at the forefront in China.
