The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University (SMSE) is one of the most comprehensive materials schools in China. SMSE consists of materials science related majors and research, including metallic materials, ceramic materials, polymeric materials, composite materials and biomedical materials, as well as materials processing related majors and research such as welding, forming, and surface processing technology. The school confers well recognized masters and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering and has many post-doctoral appointees. SMSE is considered a first class school by the ministry of education and is one of the national key disciplines for higher education.

SMSE consists of five departments: the department of Metallic Materials Science and Engineering, the department of Ceramic Materials Science and Engineering, the department of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Materials Forming & Processing Automation, and the Department of Material Chemistry. SMSE also features the Ministry of Education's Key Laboratory for Advanced Ceramics and Machining Technology, the Ministry of Education's Research Center for Composite and Functional Materials Engineering, the Tianjin Key Laboratory for Modern Joining Technology and the Tianjin Key Laboratory for Composite and Functional Materials.

The school has over 16,500 square meters of laboratory space and has a total of 107 faculty and staff members and over 1,500 students including more than 500 postgraduate students. There are 78 faculty members including 37 professors (30 PhD advisors) and 35 associate professors.  Among them, almost all of the faculty members hold PhD degrees. Our faculty have received numerous awards including one recipient of the National Science Fundation Distinguished Young Scholar award, one Cheung Kong Scholar, and 12 recipients of the New Century Excellent Talent award from the Ministry of Education.
