HISTORY

The School of Materials Science and Engineering was founded in 1985. It was composed of majors originally from the department of Chemical engineering in Polymer Chemistry Engineering, Technical Ceramics Engineering, Corrosion Engineering as well as the Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment engineering major, which was originally in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Those four majors were renamed Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Materials Science and Engineering, Corrosion Engineering, and Metallic Materials Science and Engineering respectively.

In 1993, the Ministry of Education’s Key Laboratory for High Temperature Structural Ceramics and Ceramics Machining Technologies was founded.

In 1994, the Ministry of Education’s Engineering Research Center for Shape Memory Materials Engineering was founded.

In 1995, Tianjin University Ceramics Base for the military industry was established by the university.

In 1997, the university introduced the College System and set up the School of Materials Science and Engineering, comprised of the Departments of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, Metallic Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Materials Science and Engineering and the Testing and Analysis Center.

In 1998, upon the demand for a new major, the Materials Forming & Processing Automation major, originally in the Second Department of Mechanical Engineering School of Mechanics was incorporated into the School of Materials Science and Engineering and was renamed the Department of Materials Forming & Processing Automation.

In 2001, the Materials Chemistry major under the Department of Materials Chemistry was introduced, while Materials Processing Engineering was selected as one of the National Key Disciplines.

In 2003, with increasing demands for scientific research and to further the development of TJU, the Testing and Analysis Center was separated from the School of Materials Science.

In 2004, upon approval by the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of High Temperature Structural Ceramics and Ceramics Machining Technology was renamed the Ministry of Education’s Key laboratory for Advanced Ceramics and Machining Technologies.

In 2007, the discipline of Materials Science was selected as one of the National Key Disciplines. The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering was accredited as one of the National Key Disciplines in the same year.

In 2008, the Ministry of Education’s Research Center for Shape Memory Materials was renamed the Ministry of Education’s Research Center for Composite and Functional Materials Engineering. The Tianjin Key Laboratory for Composite and Functional Materials and the Tianjin Key Laboratory for Advanced Joining Technologies were founded in the same year.
